01 · Carpet

Carpet care between professional cleans.

Most homes benefit from a professional carpet steam clean every 9 to 12 months. Homes with pets, kids, allergies, rental turnover, or heavy foot traffic may benefit from cleaning every 6 months. Between visits, these habits help protect the fibre, reduce soil build-up, and keep carpets fresher for longer.

Vacuum twice a week, not once.

Most carpet wear comes from dry soil and grit sitting in the pile. Vacuum high-traffic areas slowly and regularly, especially hallways, lounge tracks, bedrooms, and entries. Slow vacuum passes remove more embedded soil than quick passes.

Blot spills, never rub.

Scrubbing can spread the spill, push it deeper, and damage the carpet pile. Blot gently with a clean white towel or plain white paper towel, working from the outside of the spill toward the centre. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends blotting instead of scrubbing because it helps pull the stain out while protecting the carpet fibres.

Avoid grocery-store carpet shampoo.

Many consumer carpet shampoos can leave sticky residue if not rinsed or extracted properly. That residue can attract soil and make the carpet look dirty again faster. When in doubt, blot the spill and book professional extraction rather than over-wetting the carpet.

Match the cleaning frequency to the household.

Low-traffic homes may only need professional cleaning every 9 to 12 months. Homes with pets, children, allergies, rental turnover, or heavy foot traffic may need cleaning every 6 months. The right schedule depends on carpet fibre, usage, soil level, indoor conditions, and odours or stains.

02 · Mattress

Mattress care between professional cleans.

Mattresses collect sweat, body oils, dead skin, dust, and allergens over time. Between professional cleans, the best routine is simple: protect the mattress, wash bedding hot where the label allows, vacuum regularly, and keep moisture under control.

Use a washable mattress protector.

A fitted mattress protector helps block sweat, spills, body oils, and dust from reaching the mattress. Wash it regularly according to the care label.

Wash bedding weekly in hot water.

Wash sheets, pillowcases, and washable covers weekly. For dust mite control, wash above 60°C where the fabric care label allows.

Vacuum the mattress slowly.

Use the upholstery attachment and vacuum the top, sides, seams, and edges slowly. This helps remove surface dust, skin flakes, and loose debris.

Keep the mattress dry.

Air the bed before making it, avoid soaking stains, and make sure any damp area is fully dry before putting bedding back on. Moisture can lead to odours and mould risk. (Reference: Allergen Minimisation, Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, ASCIA.)

03 · Kitchen

Kitchen detailing the pros do that you skip.

Restaurant kitchens get audited. Home kitchens don't. But the same hygiene principles apply, and the worst hot-spots in a Sydney home are predictable.

Range hood filters, not a wipe.

Filters lift out. Soak them in hot water with dishwashing liquid and a tablespoon of bicarb soda for 20 minutes, then rinse. Wiping the outside while the filter is clogged is theatre.

Clean the oven cold, not hot.

Modern enamel oven liners crack when sprayed cold-on-hot. Let the oven cool fully, apply a paste of bicarb and water, leave overnight, wipe clean. No fumes, no residue, no enamel damage.

The fridge seal is where mould wins.

Pull the door open and look at the rubber seal. Black spots are mould feeding on milk drips. Wipe weekly with a 1:10 vinegar solution, dry with a clean cloth. Don't bleach it, bleach hardens the rubber.

Stainless steel needs grain direction.

Wipe along the grain you can see in the metal, not against it. A microfibre cloth and a tiny amount of dishwashing liquid is enough. Skip the spray cleaners with silicone, they look great for a day and fingerprint the next morning.

04 · Bathroom

Mould, grout, glass, and what actually works.

Sydney humidity makes bathrooms harder than other rooms. The mistake most people make is reaching for stronger chemistry instead of better ventilation.

Run the exhaust fan after every shower, for 15 minutes.

The single biggest fix for bathroom mould isn't the cleaner you buy, it's drying the air. Run the exhaust fan for 15 minutes after every shower. Open the door if you have to.

Glass shower screens: vinegar after every shower.

Mix 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water in a spray bottle. Spray the screen after the last shower of the day. Wipe with a squeegee. No build-up, no soap scum, no calcium deposits.

Grout: bicarb paste, not bleach.

Mix bicarb soda with a few drops of water to a toothpaste consistency. Apply to grout lines with an old toothbrush, leave 15 minutes, scrub, rinse. Reaches into the grout pore where bleach just sits on the surface.

Tap and shower head limescale: vinegar overnight.

Tie a small zip-lock bag of vinegar around the shower head so the head sits inside the vinegar. Leave overnight, rinse in the morning. Same trick for tap aerators, unscrew them and soak.

05 · End of lease

Quick tips before your final inspection.

Move-out cleans get judged on the small things real-estate agents inspect. Use this as a quick reminder before the inspection date.

Book carpet steam cleaning last, not first.

Carpets are easy to mark again while the rest of the property is being cleaned, moved through, or inspected. If carpet steam cleaning is included in your cleaning requirements, book it after the main clean and close to the inspection date where possible.

06 · Hospitality

Tips for venue owners between deep cleans.

If you run a Sydney café, restaurant or bar, simple weekly habits keep your venue audit-ready and stretch the time between professional deep cleans.

Weekly: inspect the back-of-house hot spots.

Check fridge seals, prep bench edges, floor corners, under equipment, bin areas, and splash zones once a week. Small build-up is easier to remove early, before it turns into odour, grease, pests, or a bigger cleaning issue.
